Live In Japan (Japan) (Mlps) (Shm) $54.99 Because the Runaways were much better known in Japan than the U.S., it stands to reason that their only live album was recorded in that country. This hard to find LP was available in the U.S. only as a Japanese import and sold for around ten to 12 dollars, which was a lot to pay for vinyl in the late ’70s. But American Runaways fans who were willing to make that investment found a lot to admire about the album, which boasted superior sound quality (by ’70s standards) and explosive, uninhibited versions of “You Drive Me Wild,” “Cherry Bomb,” “California Paradise,” and other hard rock pearls. The original Runaways lineup (Joan Jett, Cherie Currie, Lita Ford, Jackie Fox, and Sandy West) was still in place, and the rockers’ primary focus is on material from The Runaways and Queens of Noise. Holding nothing back, Ford is at her most metallic. Except for a handful of bootlegs, Live in Japan is the only documentation of the Runaways on stage. ~ Alex Henderson

Jealousy (Japan) $44.99 One of three Duke Jordan CDs previously unissued from the Japanese based Marshmallow label, the expatriate pianist is showcased in a session from 1983 featuring the fine European bassist Jesper Lundgaard, and fellow flown-the-U.S. coop jazzman, the great drummer Ed Thigpen. There are four rare originals of Jordan’s, some standards, and the obscure Duke Ellington number “Chocolate Shake.” The spirited violinist Kristian Jorgensen joins the trio for a hot version of Charlie Parker’s “Au Privave.” Unfortunately these are old reel-to-reel recordings that have probably been sitting for years, and there’s an inconsistency in the sound quality — either a magnetic degradation or slight tape wobble — that mars the quality of the performances. Then again, it could be a good recording of a bad spinet or upright piano. One way or another, the piano itself does not sound right. Though there are not nearly enough documents of Duke Jordan’s wonderful music in the world, this one needed a bit more care in reproducing or properly capturing. ~ Michael G. Nastos

Clouds (Japan) $59.99 Personnel includes: Joe Pass, John Pisano, Monty Budwig, Colin Bailey.Recorded in January and February 1992.Far from being a casual collection of rejects, there is plenty of mellow gold from Joe Pass on this posthumously released second volume from what must have been a memorable gig at this Oakland, California night spot. The two-guitar quartet format was an optimum showcase for Pass’ nimble, melodic bop electric guitar, for the greatly unsung fellow guitarist John Pisano offers inspired harmonic, rhythm or obligato support at all times, giving Pass an extra push from underneath. On “I Remember You” and “What Is This Thing Called Love?,” Pisano even gives Pass some solo chases which generate a lot of steam, and the gentle semi-bossa nova treatment of Neal Hefti’s “Repetition” also bring out the best in both. Bassist Monty Budwig (subbing for Jim Hughart) and drummer Colin Bailey are also in superb form throughout this can’t-miss outing. The sound quality is OK, though hum can be heard in some quiet stretches. ~ Richard S. Ginell

Includes liner notes by Jaan Uhelszki.All tracks have been digitally remastered.Even if you accept that a best-of for Gregg Allman can focus wholly on his solo career (as this one does) and not include any of his work with the Allman Brothers, this could not by any stretch be considered “the best of Gregg Allman.” It’s really the best of what he’s recorded for Sony, which is really an entirely different animal. That means there’s nothing from his three 1970s albums, which most listeners would view as containing his best solo work; the chronological stretch on this comp only covers the last half of the 1980s and the 1990s. Like, say, Rod Stewart, this was a time in which his recordings had really only a shadow of their old power, although (like Stewart) his voice was still in good shape and he didn’t stoop to levels as low as Stewart did. Given the pool of what it has to work with, this disc is a reasonable selection, evenly spread between highlights of the I’m No Angel, Just Before the Bullets Fly, and Searching for Simplicity albums. And there are a few extras that might make this worth getting for Allman completists: previously unreleased live cuts from 1987 (“Melissa”) and 1998 (his long-lived staple cover of Jackson Browne’s “These Days”), a studio outtake from 1985, and “Brother to Brother,” a duet with Lori Yates that was on the 1989 Next of Kin soundtrack. Overall, though, it’s hardly a guide to even some of his best work, the 1980s tracks suffering from slick period production and unmemorable AOR material. His voice is certainly operating at a level above the quality of many of the songs, and is better served by the occasional cuts on which the blues-soul elements come more to the foreground, like “I’ve Got News for You” and the cover of “Dark End of the Street.” ~ Richie Unterberger

With drummer Pete LaRoca completing the trio and such songs as “I Hear a Rhapsody,” “In Your Own Sweet Way” and “So In Love” joining four of the leader’s originals, Friedman uses chord voicings similar to Evans and engages in the same type of close interplay with his sidemen. However, since the music is of high quality and few other keyboardists sounded like Evans this early, the CD is worth picking up by post-bop collectors. ~ Scott Yanow

Here Yahel plays not only Hammond organ, but also Fender Rhodes, clavinet, and other assorted electric keys. Redman makes liberal use of overdubbing and signal processing, much of which is surprisingly subtle. The result is quite a lot of sound for three people, quite a lot of inspired blowing, and quite a lot of stylistic ground covered. Highlights include the agitated, over-the-top “Still Pushin’ That Rock,” the tight funk and involved lines of “Jazz Crimes” and “News from the Front,” and the slow gospel of “Can a Good Thing Last Forever?” Redman seems fond of the Rhodes-soprano sax combination, particularly on mellower themes like “The Long Way Home” and “Unknowing.” While one has to admire Redman’s musical open-mindedness, his writing can take on a middle-of-the-road quality at times; on this record it surfaces on “Boogielastic”. It says something that Yahel contributed the most alluring piece, a short-and-sweet song in five called “Oumou.” ~ David R. Adler

Oneness (Japan) $49.99 Personnel: Andrea Marcelli (clarinet, synthesizer, drums, percussion); Bendik (soprano & tenor saxophones); Gary Thomas (tenor saxophone, flute); Kei Akagi (piano, synthesizer); Mitchel Forman (piano); Mike Mainieri (vibraphone); Ralph Towner (12-string acoustic guitar); Allan Holdsworth (electric & electric baritone guitars); Chuck Loeb (electric guitar); Marc Johnson (acoustic bass); Jimmy Johnson (electric bass); Gary Willis (fretless bass); Frank Colon (skekere, bongos, congas, percussion); Sidinho Moreira, Laudir De Oliveira (congas, cowbells, percussion).In the ’90s, it seemed that many of jazz’s A&R people (as least at the major labels) were interested in either one of two things — if they weren’t going after hard bop-oriented, standards-obsessed “Young Lions” in Armani suites, they were focusing on smooth jazz. Either they were looking for the next Kenny G. or the next Wynton Marsalis. That wasn’t good news for fusion, which didn’t get any respect from either bop snobs or NAC radio in the ’90s. Nonetheless, quality fusion was still being recorded — you just had to know where to look. And one of the places to look was Lipstick Records, a small independent label that made fusion its main focus during that decade. Released in 1994, this little-known CD by drummer Andrea Marcelli is typical of Lipstick’s jazz-rock output. Oneness didn’t receive a lot of attention, and it was the only album that Marcelli recorded for Lipstick. Nonetheless, it’s a decent effort that employs some noteworthy players, including Allan Holdsworth (electric guitar), Chuck Loeb (electric guitar), Gary Willis (electric bass), Jimmy Johnson (electric bass), and Kei Akagi (acoustic piano). Marcelli, who produced the album and wrote all of the material, isn’t a bad composer at all. Nothing groundbreaking occurs, but most of the tracks are likable fusion along the lines of Weather Report, the Yellowjackets, and Chick Corea’s Elektric Band. Overall, Marcelli’s work tends to be intellectual yet lyrical and melodic, but regrettably, even the disc’s most accessible tracks were too spontaneous and improvisatory for NAC/smooth jazz radio; to put it bluntly, Oneness had too much of a brain for the NAC stations of 1994. Not a five-star masterpiece, but certainly respectable, Oneness is worth searching for if you’re a die-hard fusion addict. ~ Alex Henderson
